Epic Games ‘definitely Won’t’ Follow Minecraft NFT Ban

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says his firm “definitely will not” follow Minecraft developers in banning nonfungible tokens (NFTs).

As previously reported, Minecraft developers Mojang Studios has banned NFT integrations on Wednesday because it believes that the speculative aspect of NFTs as well as the risk of exclusion and scams supposedly associated with NFTs being incompatible with the game’s rules.

The move was considered highly controversial in the NFT community, however, it has been met with praise by the community of crypto-skeptic gamers.

The company of Sweeney’s is the one responsible for Fortnite, a battle royale game that has become extremely popular. It’s also thought of as a Metaverse platform. Although Epic Games isn’t necessarily pro-crypto or NFTs, the CEO stated that the company doesn’t intend to impose any opinions on the subject on its players:

Developers should be able to create their own games, and you can decide whether or not you want to play them. I believe that stores and operating system makers shouldn’t be interfering in any way by imposing their ideas on other players. We won’t.

In response to the post, Twitter user Low5ive asked Sweeney if Epic Games’ policy on prohibiting “hateful/discriminatory content” differs from this. MINECRAFT In response, Sweeney suggested that Epic Games does make “editorial” decisions, but NFTs don’t currently fall under the umbrella of.

He stated that a store cannot make any such decisions and would only play any legal game and draw the line between accepted norms and what we do, or accept games that conform to the owner’s personal beliefs.

The NFT ban by Mojang Studios has left one particular project, dubbed NFT Worlds with a major problem to resolve, considering that it was built on one of Minecraft’s open source servers.

Play-to-earn (P2E), an open-source platform for play-to-earn (P2E), has an entire NFT and crypto-based ecosystem built around. Its NFTs generate 51,000 Ether (ETH), which is $80.8 million worth of trading volume at the time. Since the news dropped, however, the floor price of its NFTs has dropped from 3.33 ETH to 1.01 ETH as of the moment of writing, while its native token WRLD has plunged by 55% within the same timeframe.

The NFT Worlds team said that it is currently “brainstorming” solutions to the Mojang announcement. The team also said that it is trying to connect with Minecraft to determine if a solution can be found. In the meantime, a switch to the “Minecraft-like game engine” or GameFi platform has been discussed as possible possibilities.
